ORGANIZE A BUS

Organizing mass transport is a great way to build relationships, strengthen organizing skills, and build capacity – all while reducing your carbon footprint! Designate someone in your group as a Bus Captain – our Bus Toolkit provides everything they’ll need to know. The basic steps are:

  1. REGISTER AS A BUS CAPTAIN

If you are planning to organize a bus – let us know right away! This will help us to promote your bus, and to connect you with other buses, partners, or riders that might be coming from your area. And we’ll make sure you get important logistical details!

    Register as Captain

  2. FIND A BUS TO CHARTER

    • Search for charter bus providers, and get several quotes to compare. Try to book with direct providers, not third-party brokers.
    • Check for discounted tickets for a public or private bus that already exists — like the BestBus, BoltBus, Greyhound, Megabus, etc.
    • Rise For CJ&J cannot organize or contract buses directly – the Bus Captain (or a local organization) would handle logistics for their bus (But Rise can support and coach you!)
  3. INQUIRE ABOUT BUS FUNDING SUBSIDIES

Limited resources are available to help offset the costs of charter buses and deposits for groups that need assistance – prioritizing  buses led by, or engaging frontline, low-income, and communities of color. Please contact buses.ca@riseforclimate.org to inquire about funding.

  4. FILL THE BUS

    • Recruit/Connect with people, organizations, faith and/or community groups in your area to help sell tickets, put down a bus deposit, and potentially subsidize seats (fundraise to offset costs).
    • Set up a ticketing or sign-up page so riders can sign up and you can track your group – we strongly suggest sliding scale tickets to be more available to people of all financial means, and some people may donate extra to cover the costs of other riders.
    • You could make a simple sign-up website with logistical info usingh Google Forms, or a ticketing platform like EventBrite which can accept payments from riders directly. Be sure to share the link with us so we can promote it and help you fill seats.
  5. ENSURE ACCURATE DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP IN SAN FRANCISCO

    • Please REGISTER YOUR BUS HERE – and send any updates to buses.ca@riseforclimate.org. Once we know how many buses are coming, we will be able to finalize a plan for parking, pick up, and drop off that will keep everything moving and everyone safe on the day of the march.
    • Buses should plan on arriving between the hours of 7:00am- 9:00am, with staggered arrival times. If you are coming from more than 250 miles away please plan to arrive between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m, and if you are coming from less than 250 miles away please arrive between 8 a.m and 9 a.m.
    • Buses should plan on San Francisco depature between 4:00 and 5:00pm – near the Civic Center Plaza area. Many roads will be closed, so we’ll update Bus Captains soon on best options.
